Over 900 years of timber arch bridge tradition
One of <1% heritage models built with full twin-beam interlock arch logic
More than 30 hours of scaled reconstruction based on 1:90 historic measurement
Rooted in the mountainous landscapes of Zhejiang Province, the Taishun covered bridges represent a pinnacle of Chinese timber bridge architecture. This model replicates the North Cave Bridge from Sixi Town, revered as one of the “most beautiful covered bridges in the world.” Featuring a layered arch system of interlocked beams, this structure demonstrates ancient Chinese mastery in using friction and compression—without nails or metal—to span rivers with elegance and strength.
Crafted with carefully dried wood—following the ancient “three-year seasoning” rule to prevent cracking—each piece is measured and cut with architectural precision. The model is a faithful tribute to centuries-old bridge-building wisdom, balancing durability with elegance.
The bridge’s engineering relies on a layered system where upper beams bear the load and lower beams provide tension support. The complex mortise-and-tenon joinery recreates the traditional method used by Song and Ming dynasty craftsmen. No adhesives or nails are used in the original bridges—just the harmony of material, geometry, and skilled hands.
This model celebrates the heritage of Taishun County, home to over 30 preserved wooden arch bridges built from the Tang to Qing dynasties. The bridges are integral to the cultural and environmental landscape of southeastern China, with their graceful forms reflecting deep harmony with nature.
Rooted in Classical Timber Bridge Building Traditions
The Taishun bridges exemplify the culmination of Chinese woodworking and structural logic, perfectly adapted to mountainous terrains and monsoon climates. The aesthetic and mechanical brilliance has earned them a revered place in Chinese architecture.
