Satin Stitch Embroidery Patented by Ming Imperial Needlework Bureau (1436)
1,850 Stitches/cm² via ‘Hair-Splitting’ Technique"
28-Day Solar-Term Dyeing for Seasonal Hues
This design draws inspiration from the Northern Song painter Zhao Chang and his celebrated floral work “New Year’s Morning” (Suì Cháo Tú). It echoes an ancient Chinese tradition: to greet the turning of the year and the seasons with art that celebrates resilience, grace, and natural beauty.
The rose, depicted here in full bloom, was chosen for its rare trait of flowering year-round. In Chinese symbolism, this means “spring in all four seasons” — a visual wish for constant renewal, peace, and harmony. Whether used as a ceremonial piece or a decorative keepsake, this fan channels that gentle blessing into your home.
The floral imagery is built using traditional satin embroidery on silk, mimicking brush strokes with thread. Dozens of shades are layered in fine gradients to achieve lifelike petal depth and leaf structure. The panel is mounted on a hand-carved wood frame with subtle antique detailing.
The piece follows the “palace fan” or gōng shàn style — once used in court rituals, now revived as an object of art. Its outline, color composition, and tactile elegance reflect both aesthetic precision and cultural heritage.
This piece was made in collaboration with the Nanjing Yunjin Brocade Research Institute, drawing from both Yunjin design logic and the regional traditions of silk embroidery in Jiangnan.
Though not a brocade weave itself, the fan’s structure and motif arrangement are deeply informed by brocade design rules and ceremonial object tradition — blending textile and pictorial disciplines.
Rooted in Imperial Weaving Legacy
The fan’s base techniques and visual grammar are rooted in Yunjin, or “Cloud Brocade” — a weaving art once reserved for the imperial court. Today, these design values and symbols live on through modern applications.
In 2009, Yunjin was officially listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing its historic and artistic significance.
