Peacock Display’ Motif in Song Dynasty (1120 AD)
1,500 Stitches/cm² via ‘Thread-Splitting’ Technique"
480 Hours for ‘One Needle, One Thread’ Feather Layering
Inspired by a late Qing Dynasty silk embroidery themed around auspicious birds and flowers, this piece captures the grandeur of the peacock with radiant plumage fanned wide. In traditional Chinese culture, the peacock is seen as a symbol of power and success. Its regal presence conveys blessings for a flourishing career and a joyful family life.
The embroidery is hand-stitched using fine silk threads on a woven mulberry silk base. The motif is composed of multi-layered threads in gradient colors to recreate the vivid detail of feathers, flora, and background, requiring high skill and over 200 hours of work. The gold frame adds a contemporary refinement while staying true to classical elegance.
Produced by the Nanjing Yunjin Research Institute, this piece stems from one of China's most renowned heritage workshops, where master artisans continue centuries-old silk weaving and embroidery techniques. Yunjin (literally “cloud brocade”) is recognized as one of the most luxurious textile traditions in the world.
