Origin traces to Han Dynasty silk embroidery (~2nd century BCE)
Fewer than 200 hand-embroidered dual-sided panda motifs produced annually
45–55 hours of double-sided silk stitching and artisanal mounting
In Chinese symbolism, the panda embodies peace and unity. Originating from Sichuan—the heartland of panda habitat and Shu embroidery alike—this design, titled Double Harmony with Lychees, reflects a poetic scene of sharing and abundance. Lychees, once an imperial delicacy, symbolize prosperity and ambition. The gentle scene of pandas offering fruit is a tribute to life’s sweetness and enduring relationships.
The embroidery itself stems from Shu (Sichuan) embroidery, one of China’s four great traditional embroidery styles, known for its smooth silk, vibrant threads, and luminous finish. This piece was crafted at Shujiang Brocade Institute, a nationally recognized center for silk heritage preservation and a designated UNESCO intangible cultural heritage base.
Each panda is embroidered entirely by hand, using ultra-fine silk thread under magnification. The double-sided embroidery technique ensures that both sides of the silk display different visual effects without revealing any trace of stitching. No glue, no machine work—only heritage passed from master to apprentice.
This piece was developed by Shujiang Brocade Institute, founded in 2001 in Chengdu. The Institute is a leading cultural institution under China’s Ministry of Culture, preserving full-cycle Shu brocade and embroidery techniques. Artisans are trained through a rigorous master-apprentice system, and each creation is museum-grade.
Rooted in Imperial Embroidery Traditions
Shu embroidery is famed for its elegance and symbolism. The panda motif, common in traditional Sichuan embroidery, brings together naturalistic rendering with cultural storytelling. The “Double Harmony with Lychees” scene echoes the peaceful cohabitation of humans and nature.
