This piece draws inspiration from traditional mangfu (python robes), where the four-clawed gold serpent was historically a symbol of nobility and auspicious power. In this design, the imagery is adapted into a stylized motif surrounded by golden coins and treasure elements, celebrating prosperity and joyful fortune.
Golden serpents in Chinese heritage symbolize wealth, respect, and eternity—offering blessings for abundance and success.
This compact Yunjin piece is woven with ultra-fine silk threads, using traditional jacquard looms in Nanjing. Each pixel of the dragon's form—its scales, claws, and golden aura—is achieved through carefully programmed threading, reflecting centuries of Yunjin mastery. The base textile structure is engineered for both detail and durability, with threads hand-trimmed and set to preserve the round symmetry and iconography.
This desk décor was woven by master artisans at the Nanjing Yunjin Research Institute, custodians of one of China’s oldest imperial textile traditions. Each piece reflects both precision in loomwork and refinement in symbolism—preserving legacy while adapting it for contemporary appreciation.
A Design Rooted in Royal Heritage
The Yunjin weaving tradition dates back to the third century and once served the exclusive demands of the imperial court. Known as the “cloud brocade,” it is one of the most complex weaving systems in the world.
In 2009, Nanjing Yunjin Brocade Weaving was officially inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.
