This fan revives a poetic symbol of harmony and nobility: the phoenix encircled by a hundred birds. In ancient Chinese tradition, the phoenix represents virtue and prosperity, while the flock’s reverence reflects unity and peace under wise leadership. Inspired by Jiangnan’s lyrical spirit, the embroidered design captures this timeless narrative in a format once cherished by imperial ladies and scholars alike.
Entirely handmade by experienced Suzhou artisans, this fan employs silk threads of varying fineness to achieve subtle gradients and lifelike detail. The structure is delicately mounted on a curved bamboo handle, and the stand is crafted from dark hardwood with traditional floral motifs.
Originating in Suzhou, the heart of classical Chinese embroidery, Su embroidery (苏绣) is known for its subtle elegance, precision, and poetic sensibility. Each piece is created by master embroiderers who undergo years of training to perfect this meditative craft. The studio producing this fan continues the legacy of traditional silk arts dating back over 2,000 years.
Rooted in Imperial Silk and Embroidery Traditions
Su embroidery is one of the “Four Great Chinese Embroideries,” known for its intricate detail, delicate structure, and harmony of color. This piece reflects Jiangnan’s refined culture and aesthetic ideals.
