The motif Double Dragon Playing with the Pearl (双龙戏珠) is one of the most powerful symbols in Chinese tradition. Dragons represent strength, honor, and cosmic order; the pearl symbolizes wisdom, virtue, and heavenly fortune.
The two dragons circling a single pearl express the pursuit of higher ideals through harmony and unity. In the Year of the Snake, this symbol resonates further — evoking transformation, resilience, and thoughtful power.
This piece is made using the ancient Yunjin (Cloud Brocade) weaving technique — a heritage textile art with imperial roots stretching back more than 1,600 years.
Crafted from pure mulberry silk and gold-infused thread, the embroidery is handwoven on traditional treadle looms operated by two artisans in synchronized motion. This process produces a richly textured surface, with a raised motif that captures light and dimension — a technique once reserved for the royal court.
This embroidery is crafted by the Nanjing Yunjin Brocade Research Institute, the foremost institution in preserving the imperial weaving techniques of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Yunjin weaving requires two artisans: one above weaving the silk threads, and another below managing the warp. Every pattern is hand-drawn, every thread inserted by hand, and every piece finished with patience, precision, and reverence for tradition.
Rooted in Imperial Weaving Legacy
This embroidery is crafted in the spirit of Yunjin, or "Cloud Brocade" — a classical silk weaving tradition that flourished in Nanjing over 1,600 years ago and was once exclusive to Chinese emperors.
Yunjin is known for its intricate technique: each piece is woven by hand on multi-person wooden treadle looms, using gold-thread infusions and silk layering to create dimensional, luminous patterns. Its designs often carry imperial symbols, such as dragons, pearls, clouds, and flame motifs.
In recognition of its artistic mastery and historical depth, Yunjin brocade has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
