The gourd shape is an auspicious symbol in Chinese culture, representing prosperity, health, and continuity. This piece is modeled after classic Song Dynasty aesthetics and glazed in a refined celadon hue with intentional crackle patterns — a signature of the revered Ge kiln. It’s a celebration of form, function, and timeless cultural symbolism.
Crafted in Longquan using native porcelain stone rich in quartz and kaolinite, this piece undergoes 28 precise steps from clay preparation to final firing at 1380°C. The deliberate “百圾碎” crackle glaze — resembling fine ice fractures — is a hallmark of Ge kiln artistry. Each vase is air-dried, hand-trimmed, and glazed in layers to achieve depth and brilliance.
This gourd vase is made in Longquan, Zhejiang, a historic kiln site known worldwide for its celadon excellence. The Ge-style glaze — once lost to history — has been revived by master artisans who inherit and innovate upon centuries of ceramic knowledge. Each piece is imbued with cultural symbolism and technical precision.
Heir to a Song Dynasty Legacy
Longquan celadon is part of China’s great ceramic legacy and a living testament to its artistic and technical mastery. Its translucent crackle glaze and soft jade tone have earned it a place among the world’s most treasured ceramics.
